The 1991 American biographical gangster film, directed by Robert Benton, is based on the novel of the same name by E.L. Doctorow. Set in 1935 in the Bronx, New York, it follows the story of an Irish-American teenager named Billy Behan (Loren Dean) who seeks to escape poverty by joining the criminal organization of notorious gangster Dutch Schultz (Dustin Hoffman). Billy changes his last name to Bathgate and becomes an aide to Schultz, performing various tasks and gradually immersing himself in the world of organized crime. He witnesses brutal murders, including the execution of Bo Weinberg (Bruce Willis), Schultz's former trusted associate suspected of betrayal, and "Big" Julie Martin, whom Schultz kills for stealing money. Despite Schultz's brutality and unpredictability, Billy begins to see him as a father figure. The situation becomes more complex when Billy meets Drew Preston (Nicole Kidman), Weinberg's mistress, and develops a romantic relationship with her. Billy finds himself entangled in dangerous intrigues and conflicts within the gang, especially as Schultz faces tax evasion charges and legal prosecution. The film explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the moral compromises required in the criminal underworld, as well as depicting a young man's journey of maturation and self-discovery amidst complex and perilous circumstances.
