A 1991 American action thriller film directed by Ron Howard and written by Gregory Widen. The story centers on two Chicago firefighter brothers: Stephen McCaffrey (Kurt Russell), a seasoned and headstrong lieutenant, and his younger brother Brian (William Baldwin), who struggles to prove himself in the shadow of his elder sibling. Despite their strained relationship, they work together in the same firehouse. Concurrently, a series of mysterious arson cases grips the city, leading fire investigator Donald Rimgale (Robert De Niro) to suspect that the perpetrator may be connected to the fire department. The investigation uncovers that the fires are linked to Ronald Bartel (Donald Sutherland), a former firefighter serving a prison sentence, whose motives are tied to corruption within the city's administration. The film showcases realistic firefighting scenes, including the dangerous phenomenon of backdraft, where a sudden influx of oxygen causes explosive combustion. The cast also includes Scott Glenn (John Adcox), Jennifer Jason Leigh (Jennifer Vait), Rebecca De Mornay (Helen McCaffrey), and Jason Gedrick (Tim Krizminski). "Backdraft" received three Academy Award nominations for Best Sound, Best Sound Editing, and Best Visual Effects. With a budget of $40 million, it grossed approximately $152.4 million worldwide, becoming one of the most successful firefighter-themed films. A sequel, "Backdraft 2," was released in 2019, featuring William Baldwin and Donald Sutherland reprising their roles.
