Boyz n the Hood

A 1991 American drama film directed by John Singleton, who became the youngest and first African American nominee for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and Directing. The story takes place in South Central Los Angeles, following Tre Styles (Cuba Gooding Jr.), who moves in with his father Furious Styles (Laurence Fishburne) and faces the harsh realities of life in a crime-ridden neighborhood. Tre is friends with brothers Ricky (Morris Chestnut), a talented football player aspiring to college, and Darin "Doughboy" (Ice Cube), who embraces gang life. The film explores the effects of crime, racial injustice, and family disintegration on young African American lives. It also features Angela Bassett as Reva Deveraux, Tre’s mother, and Nia Long as Brandi, his girlfriend. Highly praised for its realistic portrayal of social issues, the movie became a cult classic in its genre.
