Shaft

A 2000 American crime action film directed by John Singleton, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Vanessa Williams, Jeffrey Wright, Christian Bale, Dan Hedaya, Busta Rhymes, Toni Collette, and Richard Roundtree. The film serves as a sequel to the original 1971 film and follows NYPD Detective John Shaft II (Samuel L. The plot begins in 1998 when Shaft investigates the brutal assault of Trey Howard (Mekhi Phifer) outside a restaurant. He arrests Walter Wade Jr. (Christian Bale), the son of a wealthy real estate tycoon, after noticing blood on him. Wade claims self-defense. A waitress, Diane Palmieri (Toni Collette), witnesses the incident but refuses to testify. During the investigation, Shaft discovers that Wade racially harassed Trey, leading to the altercation. After posting bail, Wade flees to Switzerland but returns to the U.S. two years later, where Shaft arrests him again. The judge sets a new bail at one million dollars and confiscates Wade's passport. Frustrated with the justice system, Shaft resigns from the police force, deciding to pursue justice on his own terms. He searches for Diane to convince her to testify against Wade. Meanwhile, Wade hires drug lord Peoples Hernandez (Jeffrey Wright) to eliminate Diane. Shaft confronts corrupt colleagues, Detectives Jack Roselli (Dan Hedaya) and Jimmy Groves (Ruben Santiago-Hudson), who are working for Hernandez. Through a series of intense events, Shaft protects Diane, confronts Hernandez and his men, and exposes the corrupt officers. The film concludes with Trey's mother, Carla Howard (Lynne Thigpen), killing Wade outside the courthouse, avenging her son's death. The 2000 "Shaft" combines elements of intense action and crime drama, exploring themes of racial injustice, corruption, and personal vengeance.
