An American video game developed by Muse Software in 1981, Castle Wolfenstein is considered one of the earliest stealth-action games. Released on Apple II, MS-DOS, Atari 8-bit, and Commodore 64, it puts players in the role of an Allied spy attempting to escape a Nazi castle filled with patrolling guards and hidden treasures. The gameplay features stealth mechanics, allowing players to avoid enemies, search for keys, open chests containing weapons and ammo, and even disguise themselves as German soldiers. One of the game's innovative elements was the ability to interact with guards, intimidating them into surrendering. Castle Wolfenstein laid the foundation for the future Wolfenstein series, including the iconic Wolfenstein 3D, and had a significant influence on the development of stealth-based games.
