The 2010 British historical action film directed by Neil Marshall is based on the legend of the mysterious disappearance of the Roman Empire's Ninth Legion in Caledonia during the 2nd century AD. The story follows centurion Quintus Dias (Michael Fassbender), the sole survivor of a Pictish raid on a Roman outpost. Captured and brought before Pict leader Gorlacon (Ulrich Thomsen), Dias manages to escape and joins the Ninth Legion, led by General Titus Flavius Virilus (Dominic West), dispatched to suppress the Pict resistance. However, the legion is ambushed, orchestrated by their guide Etain (Olga Kurylenko), a mute warrior seeking revenge for Roman atrocities. The brutal massacre leaves only a handful of survivors, including Dias, Bothos (David Morrissey), Brick (Liam Cunningham), Tarak (Riz Ahmed), and Leonidas (Dimitri Leonidas). They attempt a daring rescue of Virilus but face further losses and betrayal from fellow soldier Thax (JJ Feild). Seeking refuge, they find shelter with Arianne (Imogen Poots), an exiled Briton accused of witchcraft. Despite her aid, the pursuit continues, leading to violent confrontations with the Picts, including a final duel between Dias and Etain. Upon returning to the Roman camp, Dias faces an assassination attempt orchestrated by Governor Agricola (Paul Freeman), who aims to conceal the legion's defeat. Escaping, Dias returns to Arianne, finding solace away from the horrors of war. The film is noted for its grim atmosphere, realistic battle scenes, and exploration of themes such as betrayal, survival, and moral dilemmas set against historical events.
