The Northman

A 2022 American historical action film directed by Robert Eggers. The story is based on the Scandinavian legend that inspired William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Set in the 10th century, it follows Prince Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård), who witnesses the murder of his father, King Aurvandill (Ethan Hawke), at the hands of his uncle Fjölnir (Claes Bang). Escaping death, Amleth flees his homeland, but years later, he returns to fulfill his vow of vengeance. Disguising himself as a slave, he infiltrates Fjölnir’s estate in Iceland, where he meets the sorceress Olga (Anya Taylor-Joy), who aids him in his mission. Along his path of revenge, Amleth encounters mystical prophecies, brutal battles, and internal struggles, making his journey both a physical and spiritual trial. The film also features Nicole Kidman as his mother, Björk as a seeress, and Willem Dafoe as the fool Heimir. Combining historical accuracy, elements of Norse mythology, and visually stunning battle sequences, the film creates a dark and epic atmosphere.
