Cold Comfort Farm

A British satirical novel published in 1932, Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons is a parody of the gothic rural novels popular in early 20th-century English literature. The protagonist, the energetic and practical Flora Poste, finds herself penniless after her parents' death and decides to move in with her eccentric relatives at the gloomy Cold Comfort Farm. There, she encounters a host of peculiar characters: the domineering and perpetually suffering Aunt Ada Doom, the brooding cousin Reuben who dreams of running the farm, the wild-hearted Seth obsessed with becoming a film star, and many more. Rather than succumbing to the bleak atmosphere, Flora takes it upon herself to reform her family members, bringing order to their chaotic lives and dispelling their melodramatic woes. With sharp wit and humor, the novel satirizes the clichés of "rural" fiction and celebrates common sense in the face of excessive dramatization.
