Demolition

A 2015 American drama directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and written by Bryan Sipe. The protagonist, Davis Mitchell (Jake Gyllenhaal), a successful investment banker, loses his wife Julia (Heather Lind) in a car accident. Following the tragedy, he experiences emotional numbness and is unable to express his feelings. Confronted with a malfunctioning vending machine at the hospital, Davis writes a complaint letter to the vending machine company, detailing his life and loss. These letters catch the attention of customer service representative Karen Moreno (Naomi Watts), who is dealing with her own relationship issues and raising her teenage son Chris (Judah Lewis). An unusual friendship develops between Davis and Karen, and together with Chris, they help each other cope with their internal struggles. Davis begins to literally dismantle his life, including taking apart household appliances and even his own house, in an attempt to understand his true feelings and find new meaning in life. The film explores themes of grief, self-destruction, and recovery through the lens of the protagonist's unconventional behavior.
