The 2004 American sports comedy directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber follows Peter LaFleur (Vince Vaughn), the owner of a small, rundown gym called "Average Joe's." Peter faces the threat of losing his gym due to mortgage defaults, which his competitor White Goodman (Ben Stiller), the egotistical owner of the luxurious fitness center "Globo Gym" across the street, plans to exploit by purchasing and demolishing "Average Joe's" to build a parking lot. To save his gym, Peter and his eclectic group of clients and staff decide to participate in a dodgeball tournament in Las Vegas with a $50,000 prize. The team includes: Steve "The Pirate" Cowan (Alan Tudyk), obsessed with pirate culture; Justin Redman (Justin Long), an awkward teenager aspiring to be a cheerleader; Gordon Pibb (Stephen Root), an avid dodgeball enthusiast; Dwight Baumgarten (Chris Williams), the gym's sarcastic employee; and Owen Dittman (Joel David Moore), a shy and insecure young man. They hire Patches O'Houlihan (Rip Torn), an eccentric dodgeball veteran, as their coach, who employs unorthodox training methods, including dodging wrenches and moving cars. As they prepare for the tournament, the team faces numerous obstacles, including interference from Goodman, who forms his own team, the "Globo Gym Purple Cobras," and attempts to sabotage Peter's efforts. Through intense matches and comedic situations, the "Average Joe's" team advances through the tournament bracket, showcasing unity and determination. Kate Veatch (Christine Taylor), a lawyer initially working for Goodman, joins Peter's team after rejecting Goodman's unwanted advances and quitting her firm. In the final match against "Globo Gym," Peter and his team face a decisive challenge. Thanks to Patches' advice and newfound confidence, Peter defeats Goodman in a sudden-death throw, winning the tournament and the prize money. Using the winnings, he buys a controlling stake in "Globo Gym," thereby saving his gym and gaining control over Goodman's business. The film combines humor, sports clichés, and themes of the underdog triumphing over corporate giants, emphasizing the importance of friendship, self-belief, and team spirit.
