Downsizing

The 2017 American science fiction comedy-drama film directed by Alexander Payne and written by Payne and Jim Taylor follows Paul Safranek (Matt Damon), a mild-mannered occupational therapist from Omaha who decides to undergo a revolutionary "downsizing" procedure developed by Norwegian scientists, which reduces humans to five inches tall. Initially promoted as a solution to overpopulation and environmental issues, the procedure quickly becomes a means for middle-class individuals to enhance their financial status, as money goes much further in the miniature world. Paul and his wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) plan to move to the luxurious community of Leisureland, but Audrey backs out at the last minute, leaving Paul to navigate this new world alone. Struggling with disappointment and loneliness, Paul befriends his charismatic neighbor Dusan Mirkovic (Christoph Waltz) and Dusan's housecleaner Ngoc Lan Tran (Hong Chau), a Vietnamese activist who was forcibly downsized and now lives in the impoverished outskirts of the idealized community. Through his interactions with Ngoc Lan, Paul becomes aware of the social inequalities and injustices that persist even in the downsized society. Together, they travel to Norway to meet Dr. Jørgen Asbjørnsen, the inventor of the downsizing technology, who reveals that humanity is on the brink of extinction due to environmental catastrophe. Dr. Asbjørnsen and his community plan to retreat into an underground vault for 8,000 years to survive, and Paul decides to join them, but ultimately changes his mind and returns to Ngoc Lan to continue helping those in need. The film explores themes of environmental responsibility, social inequality, and the search for meaning in life, blending elements of science fiction and social satire.
