Endless Love

The 1981 American romantic drama film directed by Franco Zeffirelli, with a screenplay by Judith Rascoe, is an adaptation of Scott Spencer's 1979 novel of the same name. The film portrays the intense and destructive love affair between 17-year-old David Axelrod (Martin Hewitt) and 15-year-old Jade Butterfield (Brooke Shields), set in suburban Chicago. Their relationship flourishes within Jade's liberal family environment, leading to tension with her father, Hugh (Don Murray), who forbids them from seeing each other until the end of the school term. In a desperate attempt to reconnect with Jade, David sets fire to her home's porch, intending to act as a hero, but the fire escalates, resulting in his commitment to a psychiatric institution. Upon release, he violates a restraining order to see Jade, leading to tragic consequences, including Hugh's death and David's arrest. The film also marks Tom Cruise's feature film debut and received mixed critical reviews; however, the title song "Endless Love" performed by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross became a chart-topping hit, earning nominations for both the Academy Award and Golden Globe.
