The 1984 American psychological drama directed by Michael Apted centers on sixteen-year-old Jake Livingston (Christopher Collet), who has taken on the role of man of the house following his parents' divorce. Living with his mother Wendy (Teri Garr) and younger brother Brian (Corey Haim), Jake's life is upended when Wendy starts dating Sam (Peter Weller), a charming yet dubious man who soon moves in. Initially, Sam appears friendly, giving gifts and talking about opening a restaurant, but Jake soon notices inconsistencies in Sam's stories and his increasingly aggressive behavior. As Sam becomes abusive and introduces Wendy to drug use, Jake realizes the danger Sam poses to his family. Determined to protect his mother and brother, Jake confronts Sam, leading to a tense and emotional climax. The film explores themes of coming of age, family dynamics, and the struggle against personal demons.
