Canadian drama from 2007, directed and written by Jeremy Podeswa, based on the novel of the same name by Anne Michaels, tells the story of Jakob Beer, a Polish Jewish boy who survives the Holocaust. In 1942, at the age of nine, Jakob (Robbie Kay) witnesses the murder of his parents by Nazis and the abduction of his sister Bella (Nina Dobrev). Hiding in the forest, he is rescued by Greek archaeologist Athos Roussos (Rade Šerbedžija), who smuggles him to his island in Greece. After the war, they relocate to Toronto, where Jakob, now an adult (Stephen Dillane), becomes a writer but continues to grapple with his traumatic past. His relationships with his wife Alex (Rosamund Pike) and new acquaintance Michaela (Ayelet Zurer) reflect his internal struggle between seeking a normal life and being haunted by childhood horrors. The film delves into themes of memory, loss, and healing, illustrating how the past shapes the present and how love and support can aid in overcoming deep-seated wounds.
