The Japanese animated television series in the genres of adventure, dark fantasy, and steampunk, released in 2003 by studio Bones under the direction of Seiji Mizushima, is based on the manga by Hiromu Arakawa. The story follows two alchemist brothers, Edward (voiced by Romi Park) and Alphonse Elric (voiced by Rie Kugimiya), who, in an attempt to resurrect their deceased mother through forbidden human transmutation, suffer dire consequences: Edward loses his leg, and Alphonse loses his entire body. Edward sacrifices his arm to bind his brother's soul to a suit of armor and receives mechanical prosthetics known as automail. The brothers embark on a journey across the country of Amestris in search of the Philosopher's Stone, hoping to restore their bodies. As the plot unfolds, they encounter homunculi—artificial beings embodying the seven deadly sins—and learn about Dante (voiced by Masaki Tsukada), a mysterious woman seeking immortality. Diverging from the manga midway, the series presents an original storyline that delves into themes of sacrifice, morality, and the consequences of human actions. The series concludes with unresolved questions, which are addressed in the feature film "Conqueror of Shamballa" (2005).
