The 1992 American drama film directed by James Foley and written by David Mamet is based on his 1984 Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Set in Chicago, the story spans two days in the lives of four real estate salesmen: Ricky Roma (Al Pacino), Shelley "The Machine" Levene (Jack Lemmon), Dave Moss (Ed Harris), and George Aaronow (Alan Arkin). Their company announces a sales contest where only the top two salesmen will keep their jobs, leading to intense competition, manipulation, and even criminal acts among the employees. The film also features Kevin Spacey as office manager John Williamson and Alec Baldwin as motivational trainer Blake, a character created specifically for the film adaptation. Critically acclaimed for its powerful performances and intense script, the film was a box-office disappointment, grossing $10.7 million in North America against a $12.5 million budget. Nonetheless, it has since gained a cult following. Al Pacino received nominations for both the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor, while Jack Lemmon was awarded the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the 49th Venice Film Festival.
