Handball

Is a team-based sports practice in which two teams of seven players each aim to throw a ball into the opponent’s goal, using only their hands while adhering to limitations on steps and possession time. Modern handball originated in the late 19th century in Denmark when physical education teacher Holger Nielsen developed foundational rules for a game inspired by various traditional European ball games. In the early 20th century, alternative rule sets were proposed in Germany and Sweden, leading to the formalization of indoor team handball by the mid-20th century. Initially played outdoors with 11 players per team, the 7-on-7 indoor format became standard in the 1950s. Handball made its Olympic debut in 1936 in Berlin as an outdoor sport and was reintroduced in its indoor form at the 1972 Munich Games. The practice demands high physical fitness, fast reflexes, accurate throwing skills, strategic planning, and coordinated teamwork. Handball is particularly popular in Europe, where strong national leagues and international competitions are organized by the International Handball Federation (IHF). Countries like France, Germany, Denmark, and Norway have historically dominated the sport. The practice includes training in passing, shooting, defending, and attacking techniques, as well as the development of endurance, strength, and speed. Handball is widely practiced in schools and sports clubs, offering a blend of intensive team collaboration, athletic challenge, and personal development.
