The 1977 American comedy-drama film directed by Jeremy Paul Kagan follows Jack Dunne (Henry Winkler), a Vietnam War veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and amnesia. Jack escapes from a psychiatric ward in New York City with the dream of starting a worm farm in Eureka, California, alongside three of his former army buddies. At the bus station, he inadvertently meets Carol Bell (Sally Field), a woman uncertain about her impending marriage. Initially annoyed by Jack, Carol gradually warms up to him, and they embark on a journey together across the American Midwest. Along the way, Jack seeks out his former comrades: one has become a dysfunctional stock car racer in Sedalia, Missouri (Ken Boyd, portrayed by Harrison Ford), another is in too poor condition to work, and the third had died in the war—a fact Jack was in denial about. Throughout their travels, Carol's compassion helps Jack confront reality and begin the healing process. The film delves into themes of trauma, friendship, and hope, blending elements of drama and comedy, and features an early post-war role for Harrison Ford, filmed before the release of "Star Wars".
