This is the practice of moving across ice using special boots with attached blades, encompassing both leisurely recreational gliding and professional disciplines such as figure skating, ice hockey, speed skating, and synchronized skating. The origins of ice skating date back to around 3000 BCE, with the earliest known skates found in Finland, made from animal bones strapped to the feet. The modern metal-bladed skate was developed in the 13th century in the Netherlands, where people traveled across frozen canals using poles for propulsion. By the 17th and 18th centuries, ice skating gained popularity among European nobility, especially in Britain, where the first figure skating club was founded in Edinburgh in 1742. In the 19th century, American Jackson Haines introduced elements of ballet and dance into figure skating, marking the beginning of the sport’s artistic transformation. During the 20th century, ice skating became a widespread recreational activity, thanks to the construction of indoor rinks and the mass production of affordable skates. The practice enhances balance, coordination, endurance, and strengthens the entire body. It holds significant cultural and athletic importance, being featured in the Olympic Games, ice shows, public skating on frozen lakes, and seasonal city rinks. Ice skating also carries emotional and cultural resonance: for many, it symbolizes winter holidays, romance, and childhood, particularly in colder regions.
