Snowboarding

The practice of gliding down snowy slopes on a wide board while standing sideways to the direction of movement, which originated in the United States in 1965 when engineer Sherman Poppen created the first snowboard prototype for his children by fastening two skis together, calling it the “snurfer.” The idea quickly gained popularity and laid the foundation for a new form of active winter recreation. In the 1980s, the first commercially successful snowboard models appeared, along with emerging communities and competitions for snowboarders. In 1998, snowboarding was included in the Winter Olympic Games, marking a significant milestone in its recognition as a serious sport. Snowboarding includes various styles such as freestyle, freeride, boardercross, halfpipe, and slopestyle. It requires strong balance, coordination, physical endurance, and boldness. Snowboarding culture is closely associated with youth subcultures, street fashion, and extreme sports, setting it apart from more traditional skiing. Today, snowboarding is widely practiced around the world, especially in mountain regions with well-developed winter tourism infrastructure, and remains one of the most popular winter activities.
