Hillary Seitz wrote the screenplay and Christopher Nolan directed this 2002 American psychological thriller, which reworks a Norwegian picture from 1997 that shared its title. The story centers on two Los Angeles homicide detectives, Will Dormer (Al Pacino) and Hap Eckhart (Martin Donovan), sent to the small town of Nightmute, Alaska, to investigate the brutal murder of 17-year-old Kay Connell (Crystal Lowe). In the land of the midnight sun, where the sun never sets, Dormer suffers from insomnia, exacerbating his moral dilemmas. During a stakeout for the suspect, Dormer accidentally shoots and kills his partner Eckhart and, fearing the repercussions, decides to cover up his guilt by claiming the killer shot Eckhart. However, the real murderer, writer Walter Finch (Robin Williams), witnesses the incident and uses it to manipulate Dormer, proposing a mutual cover-up: Finch won't expose Dormer if he helps him evade charges for Kay's murder. The young local detective Ellie Burr (Hilary Swank), who admires Dormer's work, is assigned to investigate Eckhart's death. She gradually begins to suspect that not everything aligns with Dormer's account of events. The film delves into themes of guilt, moral compromise, and psychological pressure, intensified by the perpetual daylight that prevents Dormer from sleeping and thinking clearly. The soundtrack was composed by David Julyan, with cinematography by Wally Pfister. "Insomnia" received positive reviews from critics for Nolan's direction, its tense atmosphere, and strong performances, particularly from Pacino and Williams. The film grossed over $113 million worldwide against a budget of $46 million.
