Memento

A 2000 American neo-noir psychological thriller written and directed by Christopher Nolan, based on the short story "Memento Mori" by his brother Jonathan Nolan. The film follows Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce), a former insurance investigator suffering from anterograde amnesia, which impairs his ability to form new memories. He uses tattoos and Polaroid photographs to track information as he searches for his wife's killer, the crime that also caused his condition. The narrative is presented in two alternating sequences: color scenes run in reverse chronological order, depicting events after the murder, while black-and-white scenes proceed in chronological order, revealing the backstory. As the plot unfolds, the viewer, alongside Leonard, attempts to piece together fragments of information, encountering characters such as Natalie (Carrie-Anne Moss), a bartender with her own motives, and Teddy (Joe Pantoliano), a mysterious man claiming to assist Leonard. The film explores themes of memory, perception of reality, and self-deception, offering a unique perspective on how we construct our own reality.
