The 1984 American neo-noir psychological crime thriller directed and written by Richard Tuggle, produced by and starring Clint Eastwood. Set in New Orleans, the film follows police detective Wes Block (Clint Eastwood), a divorced father of two daughters, as he investigates a series of brutal murders of women, primarily prostitutes. As he delves deeper into the case, Block confronts his own dark desires, frequenting the same establishments as the victims, leading to internal conflict and self-doubt. During the investigation, he meets Beryl Thibodeaux (Geneviève Bujold), the head of a rape prevention program, with whom he develops a romantic relationship. The situation escalates when the killer threatens Block's family, kidnapping his daughter and murdering the housekeeper. In the climax, Block confronts the murderer at a train yard, where the killer is ultimately killed by an oncoming train during their struggle. The film explores themes of duality of human nature, moral dilemmas, and the battle with inner demons. Although Tuggle is credited as the director, Eastwood reportedly took over much of the directing during production. The film received positive critical reviews and grossed $48.1 million at the box office.
