This 2004 American neo-noir thriller directed by Michael Mann unfolds over the course of a single tense night in Los Angeles, where an ordinary cab driver finds himself caught in a deadly contract-killing spree. Max (Jamie Foxx), a reserved and principled taxi driver with dreams of owning his own limousine business, picks up a sharply dressed, confident fare named Vincent (Tom Cruise), who claims to be in town on business. It quickly becomes apparent, however, that Vincent is a ruthless contract killer with five targets to eliminate before sunrise. Forced to drive Vincent from hit to hit, Max becomes an unwilling accomplice and is plunged into a moral and existential crisis. The film explores the intense psychological conflict between two opposites — the cold, philosophical killer who believes in fate and the compassionate driver struggling to survive and retain his integrity. As the night progresses, Max’s transformation from passive bystander to active resistor adds emotional depth to the suspense. Featuring a hauntingly realistic portrayal of nighttime Los Angeles, kinetic digital cinematography, and razor-sharp dialogue, Collateral was praised for its tight direction, atmospheric tension, and especially for Tom Cruise’s performance in a rare villainous role and Jamie Foxx’s nuanced portrayal of a man pushed to his limits.
