The 2002 historical drama directed by Kathryn Bigelow is based on true events that occurred in 1961 aboard the Soviet nuclear submarine K-19. Captain Alexei Vostrikov (Harrison Ford) is appointed to command the new submarine, replacing the experienced Captain Mikhail Polenin (Liam Neeson), who remains on board as executive officer. Tensions arise between them due to differing leadership styles and attitudes toward the crew. During its maiden voyage, K-19 suffers a critical failure in its nuclear reactor's cooling system, threatening a meltdown. The crew, lacking adequate radiation protection, must undertake perilous repairs to avert a nuclear disaster. The film delves into the sailors' heroism and sacrifice, their struggle against bureaucratic obstacles, and their determination to prevent a global catastrophe. The cast also includes Peter Sarsgaard (Lieutenant Vadim Radtchenko), Joss Ackland (Marshal Zelentsov), John Shrapnel (Admiral Bratyeev), Donald Sumpter (Dr. Savran), Christian Camargo (Pavel), Michael Gladis (Gorshkov), Steve Nicolson (Demichev), Roman Podhora (Lapinsh), and Sam Spruell (Dmitri). The musical score was composed by Klaus Badelt. With a budget of $90 million, the film grossed approximately $65.7 million worldwide.
