This is a water-based practice that combines elements of surfing, paragliding, and wakeboarding, where the athlete harnesses wind power using a large kite to glide across the water's surface on a specialized board. The origins of kitesurfing trace back to the 19th century when British inventor George Pocock experimented with using kites to propel carts and boats. In 1977, Dutch inventor Gijsbertus Adrianus Panhuise received the first patent for a water sport involving a person standing on a board pulled by a kite. However, modern kitesurfing began to develop significantly in the 1980s, thanks to French brothers Bruno and Dominique Legaignoux, who designed an inflatable kite capable of relaunching from the water, making the sport more accessible and safer. In 1997, they introduced the "Wipika" kite with an inflatable structure and simple control system, revolutionizing the industry. By 1998, kitesurfing had become a popular extreme sport, with competitions and specialized schools established worldwide. Modern kitesurfing encompasses various disciplines, including freestyle, wave riding, and racing, requiring athletes to possess high physical fitness, coordination, and an understanding of wind conditions. In 2018, kitesurfing was included in the Youth Olympic Games, and in 2024, it will make its debut at the Paris Olympic Games in the "Formula Kite" discipline.
