The practice of rolling a ball along a lane to knock down arranged pins, known as bowling, has ancient origins tracing back to around 3200 BCE in Ancient Egypt, where primitive balls and pins were discovered by archaeologists. Similar games also existed in Ancient Rome and among Germanic tribes, where they were often used in ritualistic contexts. In medieval Europe, bowling became a popular folk game, and in Tudor England it began to take on more structured forms. Modern bowling, especially the ten-pin version, developed in the United States in the 19th century, particularly after 1895 with the founding of the American Bowling Congress (ABC), which standardized rules and equipment. Bowling includes a variety of formats such as ten-pin, nine-pin, five-pin, Canadian, and Scandinavian styles. The practice combines precision, strategy, motor coordination, and physical activity. It serves both as a form of leisure, a sport, and a social activity, commonly played in entertainment venues. Professional bowling is governed by organizations like World Bowling, and international tournaments are held regularly. Since the 20th century, bowling has become a mass entertainment and cultural phenomenon, gaining popularity worldwide and influencing popular culture, cinema, and sports broadcasting.
