Frisbee (Flying Disc)

The practice of throwing and catching a flying disc, widely known as frisbee, is a physical and competitive activity that originated in the United States in 1948 with the invention by Walter Morrison, who created the first commercially viable flying disc inspired by pie tins. In the 1950s, the Wham-O company began mass production under the trademark Frisbee, boosting its popularity. Frisbee as a practice includes numerous game types and disciplines, such as: ultimate frisbee (ultimate) — a team sport combining elements of soccer and basketball; disc golf — throwing discs into metal baskets similar to golf holes; freestyle — performing tricks and juggling with the disc; guts — a fast-paced team game requiring quick reflexes; dog frisbee — human-and-dog collaboration where the dog catches the disc; accuracy — competitions based on precision throws; distance — longest throw competitions; maximum time aloft — trying to keep the disc airborne the longest; trick catching — catching the disc in creative ways. These disciplines evolved from the 1960s thanks to college communities and enthusiasts and were later formalized by the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) and other organizations. The practice spread globally and is especially popular in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Japan. Frisbee blends elements of sport, leisure, coordination, athleticism, and teamwork. It is used for casual recreation as well as professional competition, with world and national championships held regularly, and is considered a strong candidate for future inclusion in the Olympic Games.
