Hobbyhorsing

This is an unusual physical and creative practice that simulates equestrian sports using a toy horse (a hobbyhorse) mounted on a stick. It originated in the early 2000s in Finland as a form of children's play that gradually transformed into a structured hobby combining elements of sports, theater, cosplay, and self-expression. Although it has no single inventor, hobbyhorsing gained popularity through online communities and social media, particularly YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, where teenagers shared videos of their performances and training sessions. Participants compete in disciplines analogous to real equestrian events: dressage, show jumping, cross-country, and freestyle. All movements are performed by a person holding the hobbyhorse between their legs, requiring excellent physical fitness, coordination, stamina, and creativity. Hobbyhorse competitions are held in Finland, Sweden, Germany, the USA, and other countries, featuring formal judging and rules. Many enthusiasts handcraft their own hobbyhorses, giving each a unique name, personality, and backstory, making the practice both athletic and artistic. Hobbyhorsing holds significant social value, bringing together teenagers in supportive communities and promoting a sense of belonging, confidence, and creativity. It challenges gender and age stereotypes, showing that sport and imagination can coexist in a single expressive form. The visual expressiveness and energy of hobbyhorsing have made it a viral cultural phenomenon and a symbol of Generation Z.
