Gorodki

The practice of throwing a bat to knock out figures made of wooden cylinders arranged in specific patterns is known as Gorodki, and it originates from traditional Russian games dating back to the 18th century, though similar forms of play may have existed earlier. The goal is to knock out all the figures from a designated square area (the "city") using as few throws as possible. The figures are composed of five wooden cylinders and are set in various formations, each with its own name such as “letter,” “cannon,” “machine gun,” and others. The bat is a wooden or metal stick thrown from a marked distance. Gorodki was enjoyed by both peasants and nobility, gaining widespread popularity in the 19th century, and later became a mass sport in the Soviet Union, where official rules were established and championships held. The game requires precision, strength, accuracy, and strategic analysis of the trajectory. During the Soviet era, Gorodki was part of the GTO physical training program and developed as a recognized sport. Today, it remains of cultural and recreational interest in certain regions of Russia and abroad.
