A recreational sports practice involving the tossing of small bags filled with corn or pellets onto an inclined wooden board with a hole, cornhole originated as a leisure activity in the American Midwest and southern states. Although the exact origins are unclear, similar games existed as early as the 18th century, and the modern version gained popularity in the 20th century, especially at picnics, fairs, and outdoor sports events. Cornhole spread widely due to its accessibility, simple rules, and the ability for participants of all ages to play. Players or teams compete by throwing bags from a set distance, aiming either to land the bag in the hole (scoring more points) or on the board surface (fewer points). Standardized board and bag dimensions are established, and the practice is now overseen by national and international organizations such as the American Cornhole Organization and the American Cornhole League. During the 2010s, cornhole developed into a competitive sport, attracting participants at major tournaments, with televised matches appearing on sports channels. The practice also gained international popularity, particularly in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia, becoming part of active leisure culture.
