Role-playing game

This is a form of collective improvisational practice where participants assume the roles of fictional characters and interact within an imagined world, following specific rules and scenarios. The modern role-playing game genre was established in 1974 with the release of the tabletop game Dungeons & Dragons, developed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. This game combined elements of wargaming and fantasy storytelling, initiating a new direction in gaming culture. Since then, role-playing games have evolved into various forms: tabletop, computer-based, live-action (LARP), forum-based, and text-based. In tabletop role-playing games, participants verbally describe their characters' actions, relying on game systems that determine the success of these actions. Computer role-playing games (CRPGs) have adapted these mechanics into digital environments, allowing players to control characters in virtual worlds through interfaces and algorithms. Live-action role-playing games enable participants to physically embody their characters using costumes and props. Forum and text-based role-playing games develop in online spaces where players interact through written messages. Role-playing games significantly contribute to the development of communication skills, imagination, and social adaptation. They are utilized not only for entertainment but also in educational and therapeutic practices. Numerous role-playing systems exist, such as GURPS, Vampire: The Masquerade, and Pathfinder, each offering unique mechanics and settings. Role-playing games have become an integral part of modern culture, bringing together people of various ages and interests in a collaborative creative process.
