Maria

"Maria" is a 2024 American biographical psychological drama film directed by Pablo Larraín and written by Steven Knight. The film is an international co-production between Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It centers on the last seven days of opera singer Maria Callas's (Angelina Jolie) life in Paris in 1977, as she reflects on her life and career. The cast also includes Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer, Stephen Ashfield, Valeria Golino, and Kodi Smit-McPhee. On August 29, 2024, the 81st Venice International Film Festival gave the film its first screening and put it in the running for the Golden Lion. Critics there responded warmly, with Jolie's performance drawing the most praise. It was released in limited theaters in the United States on November 27, 2024, and became available on Netflix starting December 11. In Italy, the film was released on January 1, 2025, by 01 Distribution, and in Germany on February 6 by StudioCanal. The film received a BAFTA nomination for Best Film Not in the English Language.
