The 2020 American biographical drama directed by Andrew Levitas, based on the book by Aileen Mioko Smith and W. Eugene Smith, portrays events from 1971 when renowned American photojournalist W. Eugene Smith (Johnny Depp), grappling with personal and professional challenges, is assigned by Life magazine editor Robert Hayes (Bill Nighy) to travel to Minamata, Japan. There, he documents the devastating effects of mercury poisoning caused by the Chisso Corporation's industrial waste dumping into coastal waters, leading to severe illnesses and deformities among the local population. Accompanied by translator Aileen Mioko Smith (Minami), Smith faces resistance from the corporation and local authorities but overcomes obstacles to produce a photo series that draws global attention to the environmental disaster. The film also features Hiroyuki Sanada as Mitsuo Yamazaki, Tadanobu Asano as Tatsuo Matsumura, Ryo Kase as Kiyoshi, and Jun Kunimura as Junichi Nojima. The score was composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto, with cinematography by Benoît Delhomme. Premiering at the Berlin International Film Festival on February 21, 2020, the film was acclaimed for its powerful performances and significant social message, despite limited release and initial distribution challenges.
