A Canadian-German-Austrian adventure television series from 2011, directed by Mike Barker with a screenplay by Nigel Williams, this modern adaptation of Herman Melville's classic novel follows the journey of a young sailor named Ishmael (Charlie Cox) who joins the crew of the whaling ship Pequod, commanded by the obsessed Captain Ahab (William Hurt). Ahab, having lost his leg to the great white whale Moby Dick, is driven by a desire for revenge, leading the crew on a perilous voyage. First mate Starbuck (Ethan Hawke) attempts to challenge Ahab's madness, concerned for the crew's safety. The series also features Stubb (Eddie Marsan), Queequeg (Raoul Trujillo), Elizabeth, Ahab's wife (Gillian Anderson), and Father Mapple (Donald Sutherland). Unlike the original novel, this adaptation introduces Ahab's wife, adding emotional depth to the narrative. Filming took place in Nova Scotia and Malta, with a budget of $25 million, making it one of Tele München Gruppe's most expensive productions. It premiered on the Encore channel on August 1 and 2, 2011. The series received positive reviews for its performances, visual effects, and contemporary take on the classic story.
