A 1992 American historical musical drama film directed by Kenny Ortega in his feature film debut. The screenplay was written by Bob Tzudiker and Noni White, with music composed by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman, and orchestration by J.A.C. Redford. The film is based on the real-life events of the 1899 New York City newsboys' strike. The story follows 17-year-old Jack "Cowboy" Kelly (Christian Bale), the charismatic leader of a group of young newspaper hawkers known as "newsies." When newspaper magnates Joseph Pulitzer (Robert Duvall) and William Randolph Hearst raise the distribution price that newsies must pay for newspapers, Jack rallies his fellow newsboys, including new members brothers David (David Moscow) and Les Jacobs, to organize a strike against the unfair working conditions. Throughout their struggle, they face numerous challenges, including confrontations with corrupt police officers and thugs hired by Pulitzer. Journalist Bryan Denton (Bill Pullman) aids in publicizing their cause, while entertainer Medda Larkson (Ann-Margret) offers them refuge and support. The film features dynamic dance sequences and memorable songs, capturing the spirit of fighting for justice and the power of youth solidarity. Despite its initial box office failure, "Newsies" eventually gained a cult following and was adapted into a successful Broadway musical, which won a Tony Award for Best Original Score.
