Little Voice

This 1998 British musical drama film, directed by Mark Herman, is based on Jim Cartwright's play "The Rise and Fall of Little Voice". Set in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, the story follows a shy and reclusive young woman named Laura Hoff, nicknamed "Little Voice" (LV) due to her soft-spoken nature. After her father's death, she retreats into her room, listening to his old records and mimicking the voices of singers like Judy Garland, Shirley Bassey, Marilyn Monroe, and Gracie Fields. Her mother, Mari (Brenda Blethyn), an eccentric and promiscuous woman, brings home a new boyfriend, Ray Say (Michael Caine), a down-on-his-luck talent agent. Upon hearing Laura sing, Ray sees an opportunity and persuades her to perform at a local club run by Mr. Boo (Jim Broadbent). Her initial performance falters due to stage fright, but Ray organizes a grander show, convincing her it's a tribute to her late father. Laura's subsequent performance captivates the audience, but she declines to pursue a singing career. Ray and Mari, driven by self-interest, pressure her to perform again, but Laura stands firm, asserting her independence. The film's climax involves a house fire from which Laura is rescued by Billy (Ewan McGregor), a shy telephone engineer who genuinely cares for her. After confronting her mother, Laura gains confidence and declares her identity as Laura, not "Little Voice".
