Prick Up Your Ears

The 1987 British biographical drama directed by Stephen Frears, with a screenplay by Alan Bennett based on John Lahr's biography, delves into the life and tragic end of playwright Joe Orton. The film opens with the discovery of the bodies of Orton (Gary Oldman) and his partner Kenneth Halliwell (Alfred Molina) in their Islington flat in 1967. Through the recollections of literary agent Peggy Ramsay (Vanessa Redgrave) and biographer John Lahr (Wallace Shawn), the audience learns about Orton and Halliwell's relationship, which began at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Initially, the older and more educated Halliwell mentors Orton, but over time, Orton's rising success as a playwright contrasts sharply with Halliwell's stagnation, leading to jealousy and resentment. The film explores their complex bond, highlighting moments of mutual support and growing tension. Orton's career peaks with an offer to write a screenplay for a Beatles film, further widening the gap between him and Halliwell. Ultimately, in a fit of despair and envy, Halliwell murders Orton before taking his own life. The film was critically acclaimed for its in-depth character portrayals and powerful performances, particularly by Oldman and Molina. Stanley Myers' musical score and Oliver Stapleton's cinematography were also praised. The film received three BAFTA nominations and won the Best Artistic Contribution award at the Cannes Film Festival.​
