A 1986 American biographical crime drama film directed by John Mackenzie. The plot is based on true events and Trevor Armbrister's book "Act of Vengeance," depicting the corruption during the United Mine Workers' 1969 presidential elections and the subsequent murder of Joseph "Jock" Yablonski. The protagonist, Joseph "Jock" Yablonski (Charles Bronson), is an honest and principled union leader who challenges the corrupt incumbent president, Tony Boyle (Wilford Brimley). Yablonski decides to run for the union presidency, aiming to eradicate corruption and improve working conditions for miners. His wife, Margaret Yablonski (Ellen Burstyn), supports her husband in his struggle despite the increasing danger. As the plot unfolds, Yablonski faces numerous obstacles, including intimidation and threats from Boyle's supporters. The film also portrays the hired killers Paul Gilly (Robert Schenkkan) and his wife Annette Gilly (Ellen Barkin), who become involved in the conspiracy to eliminate Yablonski. The story culminates in the tragic murder of Joseph Yablonski and his family in their home. The film deeply explores themes of corruption, the fight for justice, and personal sacrifice, showcasing how far individuals may go to maintain power, and how courageous individuals are willing to risk everything for truth and justice.
