The 2008 French biographical crime film directed by Jean-François Richet, based on Jacques Mesrine's autobiography "L'Instinct de mort," chronicles Mesrine's transformation from a soldier in the Algerian War to France's most notorious criminal. Portrayed by Vincent Cassel, Mesrine returns home struggling to adjust to civilian life and soon falls under the influence of crime boss Guido (Gérard Depardieu), embarking on a spree of robberies and violent crimes. His relationships with Jeanne (Cécile de France) and other women highlight his internal conflict between a desire for normalcy and a pull towards criminality. Known for his audacious prison escapes and numerous heists, Mesrine earns the moniker "The Man of a Thousand Faces." The film was acclaimed for its fast-paced narrative, stylish direction, and Vincent Cassel's compelling performance, which earned him the César Award for Best Actor.
