The 2001 American biographical crime drama directed by Ted Demme is based on the true story of George Jung (Johnny Depp), who played a pivotal role in establishing the American cocaine market in the 1970s. The film begins with George's childhood in Massachusetts, where he witnesses his family's financial struggles, particularly those of his father (Ray Liotta), shaping his desire for wealth. Moving to California, George starts by selling marijuana with his friend Tuna (Ethan Suplee), but after being arrested and imprisoned, he meets Diego Delgado (Jordi Mollà), who introduces him to the world of cocaine and connects him with Pablo Escobar's Medellín Cartel. Upon release, George orchestrates a massive drug trafficking operation from Colombia to the U.S., becoming a millionaire, but his success is marred by personal tragedies: strained relations with his mother (Rachel Griffiths), estrangement from his father, the collapse of his marriage to Mirtha (Penélope Cruz), and the loss of contact with his daughter Kristina. The film also features characters like Barbara (Franka Potente), George's first love, and Derek Foreal (Paul Reubens), his business partner. Graeme Revell's soundtrack and Ellen Kuras's cinematography underscore the era's atmosphere. "Blow" was acclaimed for its performances and its profound depiction of the rise and fall of a drug empire based on real events.
