An American crime drama film from 1986, directed by Tim Hunter. The screenplay was written by Neal Jimenez, inspired by the real-life 1981 murder of Marcy Renee Conrad in Milpitas, California. The film tells the story of a group of teenagers from Northern California who confront a harsh reality after their friend John (Daniel Roebuck) kills his girlfriend Jamie (Darla Taylor) and leaves her body on the river's edge. A younger boy, Tim (Joshua John Miller), accidentally discovers the body and informs his older brother Matt (Keanu Reeves). Matt, morally conflicted, shares this information with his friends: Layne (Crispin Glover), Clarissa (Ione Skye), and others. Layne, aiming to protect John, tries to persuade the group to remain silent and help cover up the crime, while Matt struggles between loyalty to his friends and his sense of justice. The situation is further complicated by the involvement of an eccentric veteran, Feck (Dennis Hopper), who lives with an inflatable doll and has his own views on morality and law. The film delves deeply into themes of alienation, amorality, and the loss of direction among youth, reflecting the emptiness and indifference present in certain segments of society. Filming took place in Los Angeles in 1986, with its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September of the same year. The film received critical acclaim for its realistic portrayal of teenage apathy and was awarded the Independent Spirit Award for Best Film. The soundtrack features compositions by bands such as Slayer, Fates Warning, Agent Orange, and The Wipers, emphasizing the film's dark and intense atmosphere.
