A 1994 historical adventure film directed by Gabriel Axel. The plot is based on the Danish legend of Prince Amleth, which inspired Shakespeare's "Hamlet." Set in Jutland, Denmark, the story follows Prince Amled (Christian Bale) who witnesses the murder of his father, King Hardvendel (Tom Wilkinson), and brother by his uncle Fenge (Gabriel Byrne) and his accomplices. To save his own life, Amled feigns madness, allowing him to avoid imminent death. Fenge deceives Queen Geruth (Helen Mirren) by claiming ignorance about the murders and soon marries her, becoming the new king. Amled continues his act of insanity, but Fenge suspects he might be pretending. To test him, Fenge sends a maiden named Gunvor (Saskia Wickham) to seduce him. Amled and Gunvor fall in love, and she confesses her initial mission but promises to keep his secret. Later, Amled kills Fenge's right-hand man, Ribold (Steven Waddington), and reveals the truth about his father's and brother's deaths to his mother, convincing her to abstain from relations with Fenge and support his quest for revenge. Fenge decides to eliminate Amled by sending him to Duke Aethelwine (Brian Cox) with secret orders for his execution. However, Amled intercepts and alters the message, resulting in the deaths of Fenge's envoys. In Britain, Amled marries the duke's daughter, Ethel (Kate Beckinsale), and returns to Denmark to avenge his family. He sets fire to the hall filled with Fenge's drunken warriors and then kills Fenge himself, restoring justice and ascending as the new king. The film delves into themes of betrayal, revenge, and the struggle for power against the backdrop of medieval Denmark.
