The 1998 American animated film, produced by Pixar under the direction of John Lasseter, tells the story of an ant named Flik (voiced by Dave Foley) living in a colony that is annually harassed by a gang of grasshoppers led by Hopper (Kevin Spacey). The ants are forced to gather food tribute to prevent their home from being destroyed. Flik, an inventive and restless ant, aims to ease his fellow ants' labor through various gadgets, but his experiments often lead to trouble. One day, due to his latest invention, the entire collected tribute is destroyed, putting the colony at risk. Feeling guilty and eager to make amends, Flik ventures into the city to find "tough warriors" to help defend the colony against the grasshoppers. In the city, he accidentally encounters a troupe of circus insects, including the ladybug Francis (Denis Leary), the stick insect Slim (David Hyde Pierce), the caterpillar Heimlich (Joe Ranft), and others. Mistaking them for warriors, Flik invites them to the colony. The misunderstanding is soon revealed, but despite this, the ants and circus performers unite to devise a plan to expel Hopper and his gang. They construct a giant artificial bird to scare the grasshoppers. The plan nearly succeeds, but at the last moment, the ruse is uncovered, and Hopper becomes enraged. In the film's climax, the ants, inspired by Flik's bravery, rise against the grasshoppers and defeat them, liberating their colony from oppression. The film concludes with scenes of the ants and circus insects celebrating their victory, and Flik finally receiving recognition from his colony for his courage and ingenuity.
