"Prison Song" is a 2001 American prison drama directed by Darnell Martin, co-written with Q-Tip, focusing on the life of Elijah Butler (portrayed as a child by Justin "DJ JUS" Spaulding and as an adult by Q-Tip), a gifted young man from New York raised in foster care with a passion for art. His mother (Mary J. Blige), a hardworking woman aspiring to become a lawyer, faces challenges in securing employment. Her fiancé, Cee (Harold Perrineau), a photographer and family supporter, is incarcerated following an altercation with police. After a series of events, including Elijah's arrest and his mother's institutionalization, he is placed in foster care. As an adult, Elijah dreams of becoming an artist and is offered a spot at a prestigious art school, but financial constraints force him to decline. During a confrontation with his foster brother Big Pete (Fat Joe), Elijah accidentally kills him and is sentenced to 15 years to life. In prison, he endures harsh conditions but continues to create art, inspiring fellow inmates. After art classes are discontinued, he leads an uprising that ends tragically. The film concludes with his artwork displayed in an art gallery, preserving his legacy and talent.
