A.I. Artificial Intelligence

A 2001 American science fiction drama directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the short story "Supertoys Last All Summer Long" by Brian Aldiss. Set in a future where climate change and rising sea levels have led to overpopulation and strict birth control, the story follows David (Haley Joel Osment), a childlike android designed by Cybertronics to experience love. Adopted by Henry and Monica Swinton (Frances O'Connor) as a substitute for their cryogenically frozen son Martin, David forms a bond with Monica. When Martin recovers, tensions arise, leading Monica to abandon David in the woods to prevent his destruction. Determined to become a real boy and regain Monica's love, David embarks on a journey, accompanied by Gigolo Joe (Jude Law), a pleasure robot. They face various challenges, including a Flesh Fair where obsolete mechas are destroyed, and a submerged Manhattan. David eventually becomes trapped underwater, staring at a statue of Pinocchio, wishing to become human. Two thousand years later, advanced robots revive David and recreate Monica for one final day together, after which she disappears forever.
