The 2009 science fiction film marks the feature debut of South African director Neill Blomkamp, produced in collaboration with Peter Jackson. The story is set in Johannesburg, South Africa, where over twenty years ago, a massive alien spaceship appeared, carrying refugees from their home planet. Uncertain how to handle the newcomers, humans confined them to a makeshift camp known as District 9. The protagonist, Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley), an employee of the MNU corporation, is tasked with relocating the aliens to a new camp. During one operation, he is exposed to an alien substance, leading to a gradual transformation of his body into that of an alien. Betrayed by his superiors, who seek to exploit his condition for military purposes, Wikus goes into hiding in District 9. There, he meets an alien named Christopher Johnson (Jason Cope), who is attempting to repair his ship to return home and save his people. Together, they join forces to achieve their goals: Wikus to regain his human form, and Christopher to rescue his fellow beings. The film explores themes of xenophobia, segregation, and humanity, blending elements of action and social drama.
