The 1966 American Western film directed by Monte Hellman, with a screenplay by Jack Nicholson who also co-produced and starred, follows three cowboys—Vern (Cameron Mitchell), Wes (Jack Nicholson), and Otis (Tom Filer)—who unknowingly spend the night at the hideout of a gang of stagecoach robbers led by Blind Dick (Harry Dean Stanton). In the morning, a vigilante posse surrounds the cabin, mistaking the trio for gang members. A shootout ensues, resulting in Otis's death, while Vern and Wes flee, becoming fugitives despite their innocence. Seeking refuge, they take shelter at the farm of Evan (George Mitchell), who lives with his wife and daughter. To avoid capture, they hold the family hostage. When a member of the posse discovers their location, tensions escalate: Evan wounds Vern, and Wes kills Evan in self-defense. Ultimately, Vern, unable to continue, sacrifices himself to allow Wes to escape. Filmed in the Utah desert with a budget of approximately $75,000, the movie exemplifies the "acid Western" genre, characterized by its minimalist style, bleak atmosphere, and subversion of traditional Western tropes.
