Is a water-based sporting and navigational practice of controlling a sail-powered vessel using wind force, with a history spanning thousands of years and evolving from a mode of transportation to a competitive and recreational activity. The first sailing vessels appeared in Ancient Egypt around 3500 BCE and were used for navigating the Nile. Over time, sailboats became a dominant means of travel across seas in antiquity, the Middle Ages, and during the Age of Exploration, when navigation technologies saw tremendous advancements. The transition from utilitarian to sport practice began in the 17th century in the Netherlands and England, where wealthy individuals organized sailing races for leisure. In 1851, the first widely recognized international regatta—the America’s Cup—was held, becoming the oldest trophy in international sports. Today, sailing includes a vast range of classes and disciplines: from solo dinghies to large yachts, from monohulls to catamarans. It demands knowledge of navigation, meteorology, boat mechanics, along with physical fitness, strategic thinking, and quick adaptability to changing weather. Sailing has been an Olympic discipline since 1900 and maintains a strong global presence with regattas, sailing schools, and associations. Beyond its athletic dimension, the practice is deeply connected to the culture of exploration, maritime romanticism, and the philosophy of freedom.
