Sentimental Value

A Norwegian comedy drama by Joachim Trier from a screenplay by Eskil Vogt; Hania Rani composed the score. Renate Reinsve and Stellan Skarsgård take the leads, with Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas in the cast. The premiere took place at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2025, and the release continued into 2026. Trier and Vogt have written together since the early two thousands, and this picture continues their common line: relations inside a family shown through the craft of cinema. The father, a director long absent from the lives of his daughters, returns to them with a finished screenplay whose heroine is drawn from one of them. The elder daughter works in the theatre and turns the part down. The part goes to a visiting American actress, and the family history begins to exist in two forms at once, as a life and as a film set. From there the picture rests on a simple arrangement: a man offers his family art in place of conversation and waits for it to speak on his behalf. The house where both sisters grew up remains a separate character in the film.
